Then, the state institution governing children in Costa Rica decides to separate you and your siblings from your mom, and you wind up living in a state-run care shelter for several months.

Somehow, your mother is able to recover custody of you, your sisters, and your one-year-old brother. And because you are the oldest child, you are expected to care for him like a dad. Someone tells you about a place in town where you can learn how to use a computer. It's so fun you keep coming back. In fact, 5 days each week, you walk more than a half mile from school with your baby brother in your arms, carrying him up nearly 60 steps, because at the top is a place called Funda Vida where kind people are serving lunches.

Without our presence in Costa Rica, 11-year-old Jose would likely go without eating a needed meal. Instead, through eye-opening discoveries in computer classes and other learning opportunities, he now has hope and a future. His dream is to become a veterinarian and to buy a home for his sisters and brother. A dream we're helping him build one day at a time.

Gratefully,
