The Need:
No safe drinking water or clean toilet facilities for the 8 households and 34 residents of Nueva Espana, a rural community 13 kilometers from the nearest town of El Sauce, Nicaragua.

Women forced to walk 30 minutes back and forth carrying 5–gallon buckets, twice a day, from the river where they washed clothes. Boiling water for suitable drinking required additional time.

The Work:
Pura Vida, worked with El Porvenir, a Nicaraguan–based non–profit specializing in clean water, on a hand–dug well and the installation of an enclosed manual–driven pump, along with 36 latrines.

Lasting Impact:
"Before the well, the kids would be throwing up, getting diarrhea, having problems with their stomachs and now they don´t have that anymore. This has been one of the great benefits."Maria Christiana, photographed above

"We don´t have to go to the river and drink that contaminated water. Now we are drinking water that is healthier for us and the children."—Maria Christiana, photographed above

"I am endlessly grateful because now we have these things in our home. we used to go to the bathroom in the woods. Now we have latrines that are private, this makes us feel better as a people."—Maria Teressa, Mother

"I don´t get thorns in my feet anymore because we have a latrine and I don´t have to go to the bathroom in the woods."—Joesel, 7 year old boy

Pura Vida provides life–changing solutions to further the health, hope, and future of children and families in coffee growing communities. Thank you for your support, it is crucial for the continued transformation of these communities.
