Because of you, she now has a better future.

Need:
In 1996, the families of Santa Anita la Unión who survived Guatemala's 36-year armed conflict needed to rebuild their economy and provide education for their children. Many mothers who picked coffee beans, had to take their kids into the fields, decreasing their productivity and family income — depriving them of needed schooling.

Solution:
With the coffee income generated by Fair Trade prices and other support from Pura Vida, the 32 families of Santa Anita created a community preschool and daycare. While the mothers pick coffee, this one-of-a-kind center, gives 20 deserving children a safe place to learn, plus enjoy a healthy, well-balanced meal—essentials for life they never had before. William Butler Yeats said, "Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire." Today, because of Pura Vida, a new hope and future for children and their families is glowing in Santa Anita.

Lasting Impact:
"Most of us who grew up here never completed elementary school. The Santa Anita Preschool gives our children what we never had — an excellent education that allows them to pursue a profession and chose the kind of life they would like to live."
        --Rigoberto Agustin
Community Leader, Santa Anita la Unión

Why I Give
"Tens of millions start their day with a cup of coffee, yet we don't stop to think of how that coffee got to our table, including the people who grew the beans and their quality of life. Pura Vida gives me the opportunity to go beyond the notion that coffee is something I merely consume and think about a much bigger reality: Pura Vida's success translates into a better life for coffee growing families."
